California State Information

California was first discovered in 1542 by a Portuguese explorer but the first to explore its entirety and put a claim to the area was Francis Drake on 1579. In the latter parts of the 1700s many Spanish missionaries held settlements and educated many of its natives. When Mexico gained independence from Spain, they quickly laid claim to all these properties of the missionary settlement. By the end of the Mexican-American War in the middle of the 1800s, America proclaimed and established the California Republic and the Golden Bear flag plus a star was raised. Soon after, America claimed California for the United States and lost its republic status. The region was divided between Mexico and the United States which in turn became a state of America on September 9, 1850. California became known as the Golden State because of the native grasses that turns into gold like color in the summers and not because of the more popular notion that it refers to the great California gold rush that made it famous and also multiply the population of the state.

California’s Gross State Product reaches 1.5 trillion dollars that if it were an independent state; California would rank almost in between the top ten in the world economy wise. California is the home of some of the largest cities in the US namely Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and San Jose. Originally, California is a part of a large peninsula area that had a mix of rich cultural heritage from the Mexicans and the Spaniards. Today, this peninsula is divided between the Mexican Baja California and the California that is the 31st state of the United States.
