Kansas State Information

The State of Kansas lies mostly on the Great Central Plains of North America. It is bounded by Nebraska on the north, Oklahoma on the south, Missouri on the east and Colorado on the west. A large part of the northeastern boundary of Kansas is occupied by the Missouri river, just one of the many rivers that run on the sides of the state and across it. Other important rivers in Kansas include the Kansas River, Arkansas River and the Smoky Hill River. Almost rectangular in shape, the State of Kansas is seated at the middle of the coterminous states of the United States of America. The actual geographic center of the 46 adjacent states of the union is located in Smith County, a county near Lebanon, Kansas. Similarly, the geographic center of the entire North America is also located in Kansas, particularly in Osborne County. The capital of the State of Kansas is Topeka, its capital ever since it became a member of the union in 1861. The state capital is home to the Washburn University of Topeka, one of the state's largest and most renowned universities. Other major and important cities in the State of Kansas includes Lawrence, the once de facto capital of troubled Kansas, and Kansas City, a city that partly belongs to Kansas and partly to Missouri.

In 2003, the total population of Kansas stood at 2,723,507 people. This population was composed mainly of the Whites (83.1%), with a few Hispanics (7%), Blacks (5.7%), Asians (1.7%), Native Americans (0.9%) and other races. Majority of the people were Protestants (83.1%) although there were also some Roman Catholics (17%) and members of other Christian denominations. Kansas is a state of many industries. Formerly a chief agricultural state, the economy of Kansas is now relying more on manufacturing activities and other service-related industries. Farming and livestock raising, however, continues to be one of the major industries in the land. In fact, Kansas is still the largest wheat grower in the U.S. Aside from wheat, the state also grows sorghum, corn, hay, soybeans and sunflower. Major livestock raised in the state are hogs and cattle.
