Louisiana State Information

Louisiana is a South Central state of the United States of America. It is bounded by Mississippi on the east, by Texas on the west, by Arkansas on the north and by the Gulf of Mexico on the south. The total land area of the state may be properly classified into two. The first are the low plains, composed of the alluvial plains near the Mississippi River and other major rivers of the state, and the coastal plains lying near the Gulf of Mexico. The second comprises the uplands that are located near Arkansas, including the Driskill Mountain, which is the state's highest point. As of 2003, the registered total population of the State of Louisiana was 4,496,334. Like most of the other states in the Union, majority of the population are White and non-Hispanic (62.5%). The Blacks or African American population, however, is also large (32.5%), almost a third of the total population of the state. Other races apart from these two are considered minorities.

Because of the fertile and rich Louisianan plains and its subtropical to temperate climate, the Louisianan soil is the nation's leading source of sweet potatoes, rice and sugarcane. Also produced in large amounts are soybeans, cotton, strawberry, corn, hay, pecans and dairy products. Fishing is also a major industry and the major yields from the Louisianan waters include shrimps, menhaden, and oysters. Aside from its agricultural products, the whole of Louisiana is also a known source of a lot of minerals. Among the major minerals that the state exports are salt, sulfur, crude oil, and natural gas. Timber is also abundant, with about 50% of the total land area of Louisiana still covered by forests. The current capital of the State of Louisiana is Baton Rogue, which is also the second largest city in the state and home of the Louisiana State University. Baton Rouge is also one of the biggest ports in Louisiana and among the busiest ports in the United States.
