Maine State Information

Maine’s capital Augusta is one of the leading capitals in America for grain and livestock production. About 1,233,223 of Maine’s population is made up of people from variety of ethnic backgrounds---from English, French Canadian, Irish, Scottish, Italian, and German. But while it is not evenly distributed, for majority of the population lives in a fix country area, Maine is one of the states in America that is highly urbanized despite the concentration of a large portion of the population in a small part of the state. The number of its people grew steadily in recent years; this is attributed to its fast-growing tourism-industrial economy. Roman Catholics constitutes the largest single groups in Maine, but in terms of group, Protestant still has the largest---from Baptists, Episcopalians, Methodists, and members of the United Church of Christ.

Maine is relatively small state that surprisingly constitutes almost half of New England---with 16 counties and about 90 percent of the states are covered with forest. Noted early historians and explorers have distinguished it from the offshore island; however, residents of New England sometimes call it "Down east" because ships sailing north from Boston to Maine were sailing downward. Because of its natural beauty, with rugged coasts, numerous historical sites, inland resorts, and abundance of wildlife that attract hunters, anglers, and the like, tourism is perhaps the most significant economic component of Maine. One of the main attractions is New England’s only national park, the Arcadia national park, which has a diverse combination of mountains, fresh water lakes, and rocky seashore that covers half of the Mount Desert Island. Historical sites and landmarks frequented by the tourists are Old Galore (a jail until 1860 but now a museum), Burnham tavern in Madias---where colonists met in 1775 to plot the capture of the British ship Margaretta, and the Portland headlight (1791)---one of the oldest lighthouses in United States.
