Maryland State Information

Maryland was named after Queen Henrietta Maria, Queen Consort of King Charles I of England at the time when Maryland was still an English Colony. It was then called the Province of Maryland. Maryland cuts across three physiographic divisions. The Piedmont plateau is an extensive rolling upland, the Appalachian region is the mountainous part, and the Coastal Plain, which is nearly1.8 million acres, is forested. The Backbone Mountain, which marks the highest point of elevation in the state, stretches approximately to 1,024 meters. From the 1990 census, Maryland has a population of 4,781,468. It is divided into two different population regions. Vast areas of the state are rural and largest cities have a population not more than 40,000. About 4.1 million of the total population resides along the Chesapeake Bay in Baltimore and the Washington Metropolitan areas. Blacks constitute 25% of the total population. Among others are the German, Polish, Hispanic, British Italian, Russian, and Chinese, Japanese, and Filipino descents. The population is nearly all-Christian, but there is also a significant Jewish community.

Maryland’s economy was based on agricultural colony with tobacco as its staple crop. The state is also engaged in fishing, lumbering, fur trapping, and shipbuilding. Although the economic activities in Maryland are varied, the industry centers principally on manufacturing which centers primarily in Baltimore since the revolution ended. Among the leading industrial products manufactured in the state of Maryland are metals, electrical equipments, chemical products, transportation equipments, non-electrical machineries, industrial machineries, and aircraft and missile parts.
