New Jersey State Information

New Jersey is named after the island of Jersey in the English Channel. Trenton is the state capital of New Jersey. New Jersey is divided generally into three geographic regions, the North Jersey, the Central Jersey, and the South Jersey. North Jersey is just within the city of New York’s general sphere of influence, with many of its residents commuting into the city to go to work. Central Jersey is a largely suburban area, whereas South Jersey is in Philadelphia’s general sphere of influence. New Jersey is the fifth smallest but most densely inhabited Middle Atlantic state of the United States of America. It has the 15th largest percentage of minority residents of any state and the 2nd highest percentage in the North.

New Jersey is composed of 13 Congressional Districts, and has 566 municipalities. Like Arizona, Maine, New Hampshire, Oregon, West Virginia, and Wyoming, New Jersey does not have a Lieutenant Governor. The Senate President serves as the acting governor, so Richard Codey serves as the acting governor because he is and concurrently serves as President of the State Senate. Finance, warehousing, and “big box” retailing have also played an important role to the state’s economy, it attracts corporations and shoppers and to a large extent reversing New Jersey’s onetime role as a suburb for commuters to New York City and Philadelphia. Today, telecommunications and biotechnology are major industries in New Jersey. New Jersey is also a major industrial center, a significant transportation corridor and terminus, and a long-established playground for summer visitors. Ocean beaches, inland lakes, forests, and mountain resort areas are some of the highlights of New Jersey but the emergence of the Atlantic City as a casino gambling center has made New Jersey the largest visitor destination.
